Through my expedition to the North Pole in April 2010, I created an international organisation, The Last Degree, which aims to inspire, inform and engage young people in a real dialogue on urgent environmental issues facing the Polar Regions.By continuing to do polar expeditions, I can acutely demonstrate the devastating effects that climate change has had on the Polar Regions. As a barometer for global environmental health, the Polar Regions should be considered a serious warning sign for the future of the planet and humanity; and, as the next generation of leaders, it is time for young people around the world to take responsibility for the planet and materialize concrete action before it is too late. Recognising the importance and power of global businesses in today's world, The Last Degree also aims to inspire a dialogue in the world's leading companies that will help lead to change in corporate behaviour and public opinion, and link the efforts made by governments, corporations and young people worldwide. Find out more about The Last Degree here.

The One Young World North Pole expedition is my second attempt to become the youngest in history to ski to the North Geographic Pole. My first expedition to the North Pole in April 2011 was thwarted only 15 miles from the pole after my guide, Doug Stoup, and I endured a combination of devastating weather, southward drift, warming temperatures leading to open water, and injury. We were forced to complete the last 15 miles by helicopter and reached the North Pole on April 10th, 2010. This year, Doug and I are returning fitter, more motivated and more determined than ever to reach the pole on foot. This year, we will also be taking snow thickness measurements for the University of Alberta, who will use the data in long and short term observations of the Arctic Ocean to help us understand and act on climate change. To learn more about the environmental initiative that I launched last year that is behind this expedition, visit The Last Degree and get involved in the global network of people acting now for the future of the planet.
